Two nonrational models of decision making are the bounded rationality model and the garbage can model. Bounded rationality posits that managers do not have enough time, energy, money, or brainpower to consider every decision alternative; consequently, managers will try their best to make quality decisions within those limitations, using heuristics and the satisficing decision rule. The garbage can model suggests managers maintain preestablished sets of solutions for problems located in individual garbage cans.
The three decisions I have made in the past 6 months are as followed: 1. Going back to college, to earn a degree was my non-programmed decision. Weighing the pros and cons of going back to school, along with my work schedule, became the reason I was using the garbage can model, to make my decision. 2. Another non-programmed decision I made was buying a mattress. I never knew how many type of mattresses there were, which caused me to do research and visit multiple stores. I used the garbage can model for this decision / purchase. 3. A programmed decision I have made, was training a new hire on my team. I have trained many new hires in the past, therefore I have used the training module multiple times. I have also designated trainers on my team for specific areas. This was completed by using the bounded rationality model. I confirm I use “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” It has worked, I feel using this method will be able to train all the new hires.
