Firestone Tire Recall---- Ethical theory: the practitioners of business choose to value ethics as a part of the essence of business, and ethical theory can be made concrete enough to aid businesspeople who want to act ethically. Kant theorized that human beings occupy a special place in creation, and morality. The categorical imperative in the ethical system is an unconditional moral law that applies to all rational beings is independent of any personal motive or desire. Firestone did recall the failed tires eight years after the first incidents of the tire explosions, even then the NHTSA and Firestone issued a statement for consumers to make sure the tire pressure is 26 and 30 psi, in addition stating that consumers to wear seatbelts and travel lighter, with reduced speeds and avoid hot areas. This is absurd, consumer rely on Firestone to make sure that the product is safe. Companies that provide a product, have a moral obligation to safety of their consumers, the first formulations states that as “act only according to the maxim whereby you can at the same time will should become universal law without contradiction.” The blame game that went on between Ford and Firestone is subject to an imperfect duty. This is part of the first formulation of the imperfect duty is subjective and is morally binding. The case truly should have started in 1992, but Firestone didn’t start the recalling until 2000. It is astounding that even with the internal memos about the bubbles on the tire shoulder. The company completely ignored it because they thought it was due to warranty claims. This started to with the strike in Decatur factory. Kant’s theorizes is that Firestone and Ford having a moral obligation to their product and their customers.
