Verbal and nonverbal communication process
Verbal communication requires the transmission of an idea, sending the idea through a medium, receiving the message, understanding the idea and providing feedback to the message sender. (Wallace and Roberson, 2009). Nonverbal communication uses the process of sending and receiving wordless cues between people. When you transmit an idea their has to be a message generated by an event. It can be there is a new procedure being added to the Standard Operating Procedures of a police department. That idea that was formed must be sent through a medium, which can be verbal or oral. It can be in the form of a handout given to all employees to ensure everyone is aware of the new change. By distributing the message the employees have received the message. The receivers must be able to understand the idea being communicated. And therefore feedback is essential to the sender. Nonverbal communication messages can be expressed through gestures and touch, body language or posture, facial expression and eye contact. An example of nonverbal communication can be when an officer tells another officer to come over using hand signals. Another example would be a traffic officer directing traffic and using his or her hand to stop traffic.

Differences between listening and hearing in communication
Listening is when someone really shows concern to what is being said. Hearing can be a bit more lazy simply because you can hear a lot of things and they can go in one ear and out the other. A police officer may be training a rookie and the rookie may Running head: Effective Communication Paper3
