Define difference and inequality and provide an example of each on City Road

Difference is a word used in social science to define the variance between groups within society. For example, one person can be a male Asian who is a pensioner and disabled whereas, another person can be an African male who is a youth, homeless and a baptist. They have various differences. Differences like those mentioned are determined to assist social scientists in identifying patterns, comparisons and irregularities within society.

An example of difference on City Rd is the local people who through a self-imposed cognitive bias, erroneously perceive the Mackintosh Centre with its gentry history and intimidating fence as an “expensive” and “exclusive” place; a club for a different class of people (The Open University, 2014 a). Difference is often related to another concept.

Social scientists define the concept inequality as when one or more different groups or individuals are deprived of assets they value such as economic, cultural, power or educational. For example: lack of access for the disabled, financial constraints on freedom of consumption, lack of access to facilities because of age, sexual or gender differences, disparity between rich and poor.

Inequality manifests itself in John Arthur`s story : an early addiction to alcohol, a pattern of crime resulting in incarceration and to date, homelessness (The Open University 2014a). John from an early age becomes different with a feeling of alienation as a result of disengaging himself from society. Consequently, society uses its power to negatively define John and by doing so, creates social and economic inequality.
