Christopher’s father is the one person who really understands him.’ Do you agree?
Through the eyes of Christopher Boone, ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- time’ by Mark Haddon explores the life of Christopher, a 15 year old boy with Asperger’s syndrome. His disability leads to many conflicts in the novel, one resulting in the divorce of his parents. With Christopher’s disability, people, even like himself, struggle to understand him. His mood always changes like if he sees ‘4 red cars in a row then it is a super good day’ and if he sees ‘4 yellow cars in a row then it is a black day’. Christopher’s father, Ed guides Christopher through life and it seems as though Ed is the only person who understands him. However, several other characters like his mother and Siobhan also understand him.
Christopher’s father, Ed, is generally a calm and collective person who loves Christopher and ‘would never do anything to hurt him’. Ed understands Christopher but he is not the only character that understands him. At the police station Ed shouted and swore at the police officer because he was desperate to see his son. Christopher does not like being touched so instead they ‘hold up their left hand and spread it out into a fan and let their hands touch.’ Ed knows Christopher well and can adapt to his behavioral problems like not giving Christopher anything with the color yellow or brown or not letting the other foods on his plate touch each other and so on. He makes Christopher feel comfortable at home and ensures that he is safe.
Judy, Christopher’s mother also understands Christopher. However, she does not know how to respond or react to Christopher’s behavioral problems. She often forgets how he acts and with her short temper often snaps at Christopher. Judy loves Christopher very much and leaving him was very hard for her but she ‘felt it that they would be better off without [her]’. She felt that she was not needed and it would ease the pressure off...
