6. Discuss your involvement in and contributions to a community near your home, school or elsewhere. Please select an experience different from the one you discussed in the previous question, even if this experience also involved leadership. What did you accomplish? How did this experience influence your goals?  

Over the course of two summers I have participated in a cancer walk for cancer patients. All of the workers involved with this walk are volunteers. In fact, every person involved in this walk other than the cancer patients are volunteers. Everyone comes together in order to create a special event that gives an enormous amount of support for the patients. I can only imagine the amount of discomfort and pain that these patients experience while fighting such a brave battle.

The manner that the walk is organized gives off a feeling of a party atmosphere. I’m quite sure that this type of atmosphere is needed by the patients and their families. They go through tough times and only want to enjoy themselves, even if it’s only for that one day. At, the cancer walk there are snowballs, music for singing and dancing, and all types of food ranging from doughnuts to pizza.

Throughout the day all you see is smiles and all you hear is laughter. Everyone enjoys themselves and celebrates the lives that still exist as well as the lives that have passed on. There are color codes that identify each person at the walk. For example, light green may mean that you are a relative to a patient who has passed on, blue may mean that you are or know a person who is in remission, and so on and so forth.

While volunteering here I was able to learn how to truly appreciate my life for what it is. The need to want to give more of myself back to the community increased dramatically.
